Chapter Book: Humorous Fiction
Rescue, Pig, Toast
DiCamillo, Kate. Mercy Watson to the Rescue. Illus by Van Dusen, Chris. Candlewick Press, 2005, 68 pages. Primary.
Mercy Watson, a pig, inadvertently causes problems and becomes the hero as she goes looking for some toast in her 1950’s neighborhood after the bed of her owners, Mr. & Mrs. Watson, breaks through the floor. The dialog and playful narrative from an omniscient point of view combined with the vibrant, exaggerated, cartoon flare illustrations create a delightfully silly story of rescue.
Activities: Talk about the students favorite foods. Discuss what the students would do if they woke up at night. Have them write or draw a picture about what they would do.
