The 20th Century Children's Poetry Treasury

Collection: Poetry
Children’s Poems

Prelutsky, Jack (selected). The 20th Century Children’s Poetry Treasury. Illus by Meilo So. Alfred A. Knopf, 1990, Primary, Secondary.

This is a collection of over 200 poems by poets as Nikki Grimes, John Ciardi, Karla Kuskin, Ted HUghes, e.e. Cummings, Eve Merriam, Arnold Adoff, and many others. The poems include topics that children think about today like sports, sibling rivalry, outer space, monsters, food fights, school, and silliness. This is a great book to introduce children to the fun that poetry can be. The illustrations are bright watercolor paintings with some possible pen detailing. They are fun and very appealing to children. They help bring the poems to life.

Activities: Compare poems in here with older more didactic poems and talk about what interests the students more and why.
