Picture book: Folklore: Pourquoi
Light, Sun Moon, Raven
Dixon, Ann. How Raven Brought Light to People. Illus by James Watts. Margaret K. McElderly Books, 1992, unp. Primary.
This retelling of the Tlingit story tells how the trickster raven, after changing himself into a spruce needle and being swallowed by the chief’s daughter, becomes the chief’s grandchild and throws fits and gets the boxes the chief is hoarding off the shelf which hold the lights. He releases the light into the sky thus giving light to the world. The dialog and fast moving narrative style from a third person point of view add to the striking, authentic paintings give a dramatic story of how the sun, moon and stars came about as well as how raven got his black color.
Activities: Talk about what it would be like to be in the dark. Then, try to make the room as dark as possible without scaring the children and have them draw a picture, even use blindfolds if the children are up to it . After that, let them draw a picture with the lights on in the classroom and talk about the differences.
