Sam, Bangs, & Moonshine

Picture Book: Fiction, Caldecott
Lies

Ness, Evaline. Sam, Bangs, & Moonshine. Illus by Evaline Ness. Henry Holt and Company, 1966, unp. Primary.

Sam’s is a little girl who likes to tell lies, one of which leads her neighbor Tomas and her cat Bangs marooned on a rock off a small island, near a harbor. The four color pen, ink , and print stylized and emotional illustrations in muted blue, maroon, navy, and mustard combine with the dialog and third person narrative from a child’s point of view to leave us with a thoughtful tale of a girl who learns that lies can hurt people and how to decide between reality and lies.

Activity: Talk about why lies can hurt people.
