The Cremation of Sam McGee

Picture Book: Poetry, Narrative
Cold, Cremation, Promise

Service, Robert W. The Cremation of Sam McGee. Illus by Ted Harrison. Greenwillow Books, 1986, unp. Intermediate+.

Sam McGee, a man from Tennessee, is always cold as he searches for gold in the Yukon, so as the days go on, he asks his friend to cremate him in the end. The inner rhyme and end rhyme work together with the vibrant colored, acrylic huorous paintings to give us humor in word and scene of cold, cremation, and keeping your promise to a friend. The words are on the left page with the pictures on the right. At the right margin on the bottom of the left page are illustrators notes that enhance the poem and the paintings.

Activities: Write about a time that you have been so cold that you could not warm up. How did it feel when you finally did warm up? If you have never had such an experience, write about what you think it would feel like to be that cold. Write about a time that you were too hot and so hot that you wished you could put yourself in a freezer. If you have never had an experience, write about what you think it would feel like.
