Picture Book: Folklore: Folktale
Adventure, Beanstalk, Giant, Wealth
Howe, John. Jack and the Beanstalk. Illus by John Howe. Little, Brown, and Company, 1989, unp. Primary.
In this reteling of the English folk tale, Jack climbs up a huge beanstalk, that grew from magic beans he traded for his cow, where he meets a a nice giant lady and her mean giant husband. He is able to steal their riches from them and take them back to his mother. The detalied, dark paintings add a sense of danger to the simple narrative from a third person point of view, to tell the story of an adventurous boy who finds treasure from a giant at the top of a beanstalk.
Activity: Imagine what else the giant might have had up in his castle. Write an alternate ending to the story where the harp does not yell that she is being stolen and Jack is able to go back up the beanstalk. What else would he find there? Would he get caught?
