The Girl Who Swam with the Fish

Picture Book: Folktale: Transformation
Respect, Salmon

Renner, Michelle. The Girl Who Swam with the Fish: An Athabascan Legend. Illus by Christine Cox. Alaska Northwest Books, 1995, unp. Primary.

A long time ago, a young girl who waited for the King salmon to come back to the Alaskan river near her village wondering what it would be like to be a salmon, fell into the river and transformed into a salmon. As a salmon she learned how the salmon wished to be treated by the people, which she taught her family when she returned to them as a girl again. The descriptive, easy to read, informative, narrative from a child’s point of view combine with the bright, colorful paintings to create a thoughtful lesson on respect for salmon.

Activities: Would you like to swim with the fish? Why or why not? Write about the best things about it and the worst things about it.
