The Call of the Wild

Chapter Book: Animal Fiction
Animal Instinct, Indetity

London, Jack. The Call of the Wild. Vintage Books, 1990, 102 pages. Primary+.

After the dog Buck is taken from his home to Alaska, he struggles with his masters of the Klondike Gold Rush until he is saved by John Thornton. Buck learns to survive in the cruel environment and listens to the “call of the wild” and eventually becomes a wild dog. The realistic, direct and descriptive third person narration with insights into Buck’s reasoning, dreams, and desires give us a thoughtful and sympathetic tale of a dog finding his identity.

Activities: Compare Judge Miller and John Thornton. Who was the better master for Buck and why? Why is The Call of the Wild a good title for this novel?
