Picture Book: Fiction, Alaska Picture Book
Animals, Dreams, Polar Bear
Dwyer, Mindy. Sweet Dreams, Polar Bear. Illus by Mindy Dwyer. Alaska Northwest Books, unp. Pre-K, Primary, Secondary.
We take a look at the dreams of Alaska Wildlife, where a black bear dreams of eating toast with peanut butter and blueberry jelly, a moose dreams of muffins and herbal teas, and a polar bear dreams of hot sandy beaches with a tropical drink, as well as other animals’ dreams. On one page we have the picture of the sleeping animal with the text wrapping around it, while on the other page we have the illustration of the animal’s dream. The rhyming text in third person narration and the warm and engaging, colorful, playful combination of surreal and realistic join together to bring forth a warm tale of sweet dreams and northern animals.
Activities: Talk about how we dream and some of the good dreams we have had. Have each student draw a picture of or write about their favorite dream they have had or a dream they would like to have.
