Where the Wild Things Are

Picture Book: Fiction, Caldecott
Anger, Parental Love

Sendak, Maurice. Where the Wild Things Are. Illus by Maurice Sendak, Harper Collins Publishers, 1988, unp. Primary, Intermediate.

After trhowing a fit and getting mad at his mom, Max is sent to his bedroom without dinner in the 1960’s where his room turns into a forest and Max eventually ends up in a land full of wild things which he tames before coming back home to find dinner waiting for him. The detailed, pen and ink drawings with muted tones are sometimes scary and other times humorous. The straightforward, quick-paced narration add to the illustrations to give us a reflective story of overcoming anger and a mother’s love.

Activities: Discuss if you have ever felt the way Max did in the beginning of the story. What did you do? What helped you calm down? Draw a picture of your “Wild Thing”.
