Picture Book: Wordless
Imagination, Circus
Fleischman, Paul and Kevin Hawkes. Sidewalk Circus. Candlewick Press, 2004, unp. Pre-K, Primary, Secondary.
As a girl waits at her bus stop in the city and sees signs of the coming circus, her imagination lets her see the circus unfold in the activities happening across the street.
In this wordless tale, the realistic, acrylic paintings tell the story. The colors are primary colors with line to create structure, and the shadows creating the story. The delightful illustrations make us want to see a circus and look for the fun in the world around us.
Activity: Talk about how imagination can make the ordinary fun and extraordinary. Draw pictures of ordinary things in the classroom, but make them into extraordinary adventures.
